The capital is quieter than Zurich and closer to the Bernese Oberland. Arcades, the Zytglogge clock and the river Aare.
Bern is often skipped and rarely regretted. The old town is a single UNESCO site, six kilometres of arcades under one roofline, and the river bend gives it a calm most capitals lack. From Bern, the Emmental valley with its cheese dairies is thirty minutes away, and Interlaken under an hour. We use it as an overnight between Lake Geneva and the mountains, or as a day trip from either.

Is one day enough for Bern?
Yes for the old town and a cheese dairy. Stay overnight to add the Klee Centre and the Gurten.
